Woodsy Owl History

Woodsy Owl is America's icon for the conservation of the environment. In 1974 Congress passed the Woodsy Owl Act. This law declares the Woodsy Owl name, character, and slogan as property of the United States, authorizes the collection of royalties for commercial use of the Woodsy Owl symbol and the slogan "Give a hoot, don't pollute."

The objective of the Woodsy Owl licensing program is to license the commercial use of Woodsy Owl and to collect royalties and secure them in a fund to be used only for promoting conservation messages. That authority has been delegated to the USDA Forest Service.

Woodsy continues to be American's one and only environmental symbol. Over time, he has evolved. His message has broadened from "Give a Hoot. Don't Pollute." to "Lend a hand. Care for the land." He drives awareness of his message via public appearances and distribution of educational materials. Woodsy continues to create a connection with consumers while raising environmental awareness.

"Give a Hoot. Don't Pollute."
