Benefits Frequently Asked Questions 2008

How do I find out if my current doctor is available in the plan I want?
Check the Provider lists on the Blue Shield website

http://www.mylifepath.com  or ask your doctor.

I don't want any of the County plans.  What happens if I refuse to enroll?
Any employee who fails to re-enroll in the health insurance plan or does not appropriately waive coverage wil forfeit his/her full Benefit Amount in 2008.

Can't I just waive the insurance?
Effective 2006, all County employees must be enrolled in the County's health insurance program (medical, dental, and vision coverage) UNLESS they can provide evidence of medical coverage as a primary member or dependent under one of the following:

  • Employer-provided group health plan;
  • Employer-sponsored retiree group health plan;
  • A group health plan sponsored by any branch of the United States military;
  • Medicare recipient.

In the event there is some question whether your health plan meets the waiver criteria, the County Human Resources Director will make the final determination.

Why can I only enroll or make changes during Open Enrollment?
The United States IRS makes the rules for this type of plan.  To protect our pre-tax status we must carefully follow Federal IRS regulations.

What does "pre-tax" mean?
The premiums for these plans are paid out of your gross earnings before the taxes are calculated.  These are not just delayed taxes.  They are avoided taxes.  You will never have to pay them.  Your retirement contribution is also paid pre-tax.   Pre-tax means immediate direct savings to you.

Do the County  plans have mail order prescriptions available?
Yes.

Blue Shield/Medco provides a 90 day supply for two co-pays.

Kaiser provides a 100 day supply for one co-pay.
