Juvenile Detention Facility & Juvenile Courts 11200 Ave. 368 Visalia, CA 93291 (559) 735-1600 The Juvenile Detention Facility opened in September 1999. The facility consists of three Pods. Each Pod contains four separate units, for a total capacity of 210. The facility is state-of-the-art for safety and security, providing the people of Tulare County a facility that provides protection for the community and for the juveniles detained there. While in the facility, the Probation Department’s intent and goal is to provide structure and programming for juveniles that promote responsibility, accountability, and positive change. The Juvenile Detention Facility is a complex program that attempts to meet several needs of the County. A large portion of the facility is dedicated to detention beds, i.e., juveniles that have been arrested and detained by the Court until their disposition, and then waiting until placement in whatever program/facility ordered by the Court. Eighteen beds in the facility are dedicated to Long Term Commitments for boys and girls that normally would be committed to the California Youth Authority. Minors in these units receive a full spectrum of programming including school, drug and alcohol counseling, corrective thinking groups, and other mental health and developmental services as deemed necessary. This allows for treatment to occur in the community where family and personal relationships can be strengthened rather than severed; provide a range of alternative dispositions to the Courts before whom these offenders appear; and in order to provide opportunities for private citizens to contribute actively to the rehabilitation of offenders in their own neighborhoods. In addition to housing juveniles, the Juvenile Detention Facility has a state-of-the-art kitchen that provides three meals and a snack for inmates and for the Youth facility as well. There are modern laundry facilities, allowing the staff to take care of the needs of both facilities. The Juvenile Detention Facility has a large, commodious area for medical staff, providing basic medical coverage 24 hours per day, seven days per week along with space for doctors, mental health staff, a part-time psychiatrist and part-time dentist.
